SIGS 2026

Theme: K-Wave

Approach

Before shaping the actual design, the overarching goal was defined as integrating the existing elements as effectively as possible. For this reason, existing plantings and trees will be preserved and incorporated into the design. Local materials and construction techniques, as well as plants are intended to be an integral part of the design concept. In addition, barrier-fee design and the play value of the garden is given high importance and is to be integrated accordingly to ensure excitement and inclusive experiential quality.

Concept

Relating to the overarching theme of the K-Wave, each of the outer columns symbolizes a key contributing factor that initiated or supports the cultural phenomenon. Each factor is assigned a specific color, represented by a particular variety of iris. The center unites these colors. The transition between inside and outside is meant to be soft and seamless. For this reason, grasses that sway in the wind like waves are primarily used in the transition zone.
The central pillar represents the K-Wave itself—Ha-ryu—which is supported and nourished by the outer columns. To implement this idea within the design, a bamboo structure is planned around the columns, forming roof-like connections between pairs of columns, with seating areas underneath. This roof structure is intended to be overgrown by the already existing Virginia creeper. From each column, two parallel bamboo rods spiral toward the center, serving as marble tracks. They are installed at about 1.00m height, so the marble-run is also useable for children and visitors in wheelchair.
